Rapid antigen test kits can be bought from supermarkets and pharmacies, get results much quicker than PCR tests, know how to use the test kit at home

You can now buy rapid antigen test kits from supermarkets and pharmacies to test for COVID-19 at your home in about 15 minutes.

With this test you can get your results much quicker than with standard PCR tests. Let us know how to make the most of these rapid antigen tests, and increase the chances of a meaningful result.

What is Rapid Antigen Test?

A rapid antigen test detects the SARS-Cov-2 protein, the virus that causes COVID-19, in a sample of a person’s body. You can collect the sample yourself at home using a nasal swab or saliva.

The test most people will be familiar with, the polymerase chain reaction or PCR test, is different. It detects the genetic material in the virus. PCR samples are collected by trained healthcare workers, and processed in the laboratory by trained technicians.

Rapid antigen test can be done by any competent person anywhere. You can get results in about 15 minutes, whereas PCR results can take hours to days.

However, rapid antigen tests are not as reliable as PCR tests. You are more likely to get a false negative result (many times this test result indicates that you do not have COVID-19), or a false positive report (in which the test indicates that you do not have COVID, even if you do not have COVID) -19) is found. However, the accuracy of rapid antigen tests improves if you do them when you have symptoms or within seven days of potential exposure.

Why use a test kit?
Rapid antigen tests are useful if you want to quickly check whether you have COVID-19. For example, there is going to be a function in your family, in which the weak and elderly members of the family are also going to participate. So you want to keep them safe. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and cannot get a PCR test done right away, you can use a rapid antigen test.

How do you test?
The tests come with instructions (and a QR code linking to a video). You must follow the instructions to the letter to get accurate results. Depending on the type of test, you will collect a sample of nasal secretions or saliva, which you put in a chemical solution. You then place that chemical solution in your sample on an indicator device – which is similar to a pregnancy test. It shows positive results through color change.

Seven tips to get accurate results

1. Check the expiry date of the test kit. Do not use a test that has expired.

2. Some tests must be kept at room temperature for 30 minutes before using them.

3. If you are using a nasal swab, clean your nose before taking the sample. If using a saliva test, do not eat or drink anything for 10 minutes before collecting the sample.

4. By following this instruction, you avoid contaminating the sample. Regardless of which test you use, the instructions say that you clean the flat surface; Wash or sanitize and dry your hands; And place the test item on the cleaned surface. Never, ever touch the commercial end of the swab (the soft end that goes into the nose) as you could contaminate it.

5. Follow sample collection instructions completely. For example, with a nasal swab you will be asked to insert the swab 2 cm, rotate the swab five times, and do this in both nostrils. Once you collect the sample it goes into a chemical solution.

6. Place a specified number of drops of solution on the indicator device.

7. Read the result at the recommended time. For example, the instructions may ask you to read the results 15 minutes to 20 minutes after instilling the solution. The result may not be accurate if it exceeds 20 minutes.

What do the colored lines mean? There are two colored lines to see on the instrument. One is C (control). It tells you whether the test is working properly or not. The second one is T (test) or Ag (antigen). And the combination of these gives the result of the test.

If C does not appear colored, the test is invalid. Maybe the test kit has expired, or you didn’t take the test correctly.

If C appears colored and T (or Ag) does not appear colored, your result is negative (you are not likely to have COVID-19). – If both C and T (or Ag) appear colored, then your result is positive (you may have COVID-19).
