porto alegre, (Agency/Talks)Former Brazil, Liverpool and Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva, 36, announced his retirement from football on Friday after being diagnosed with a heart condition during routine medical tests.

He made the announcement at a press conference at the Brazilian club Gremio. He started his career with this club in 2005 and his football journey ended here. Leiva represented Liverpool between 2007 and 2017 and was also a part of the team that won the English Premier League in 2012. He joined Lazio for five seasons and won the Italian Cup in 2019. The defensive midfielder returned to Gremio last year.

He also played 24 matches for the Brazil national team between 2007–13. “I am ending my career where I want to, but not in the way I thought,” Leiva told reporters here. I really hoped that I could change it, but it did not happen. My health comes first for me.”

Gremio’s doctor, Marcio Dornelles, said Leiva had stopped working at the club after the first heart reports three months ago. Recent tests showed no improvement in his condition. He said, “We finished his tests yesterday. When we evaluated his fibrosis and the risks surrounding it, we told Lucas that he should not continue with high-performance activities.”

Leiva said on Instagram that he doesn’t know what the future holds for him, but Liverpool will always be his home. Leiva said, “I am a Scouser. Thank you to all the fans around the world, I am sure you will be happy for me in this new phase of my life.
