Modi government's gift to workers, minimum wage increased; Applicable from 1 October

The new pay rates will be effective from October 1, 2024. The last revision was in April 2024.

Modi Govt Minimum Wage Hike: Modi government at the Center has given a gift to the workers before Diwali. The central government on Thursday announced an increase in the minimum wage rates by amending the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). The new wage rates will be applicable from October 1.

The official release of PIB said, “In a significant step to provide support to workers, especially unorganized sector workers, the Central Government announces increase in the minimum wage rates by amending the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). The purpose of this adjustment is to help workers cope with the rising cost of living.”

Workers engaged in various sectors including building construction, loading and unloading, watch and ward, sweeping, cleaning, housekeeping, mining and agriculture within central sector establishments will benefit from the revised wage rates. The new pay rates will be effective from October 1, 2024. The last revision was in April 2024.

Minimum wage rates are classified on the basis of skill levels – unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled – as well as geographical area – A, B and C.

According to the official notification, after the revision, the minimum wage rate for workers doing unskilled work in construction, sweeping, cleaning, loading and unloading in Zone 'A' will be Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month), for semi-skilled It will be Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month), Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month) for skilled, clerical, and unarmed chowkidar and Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month) for highly skilled and unarmed chowkidar.

The Central Government revises the VDA twice a year, with effect from April 1 and October 1, based on the six-month average increase in the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. The last revision was in April 2024.
