Manik Saha becomes 11th CM of Tripura

Saha single-handedly took oath as the party is yet to finalize the list of his cabinet members due to widespread alleged dissatisfaction among legislators and party functionaries after the sudden change of chief minister.

Agartala. Manik Saha, Professor of Dental Surgery at Tripura Medical College, took oath as the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura on Sunday. Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya administered the oath of office and secrecy to 69-year-old Saha in a simple ceremony. After the resignation of Biplab Dev, the BJP has entrusted this responsibility to him. Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb was present at the oath ceremony along with BJP MLAs and other state ministers.

Saha single-handedly took oath as the party is yet to finalize the list of his cabinet members due to widespread alleged dissatisfaction among legislators and party functionaries after the sudden change of chief minister.

Three former ministers in Biplab Kumar Dev’s cabinet, including deputy chief ministers Jishnu Dev Verma and Ram Prasad Paul, and several legislators stayed away from the swearing-in ceremony. However, Union Ministers Pratima Bhowmik, Ratan Lal Nath and IPFT leader and former Tribal Welfare Minister Mewar Kumar Jamatia and some other MLAs and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony.

At the same time, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma and Minister Ram Prasad Paul reached the Raj Bhavan shortly after the swearing-in ceremony was over to protest Shaha’s legislature party meeting as Chief Minister. Saha left the Congress and joined the BJP in 2016. After joining the BJP, Manik was made the state party president in 2020 after four years.

He also became the President of Tripura Cricket Association. Saha was recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha and has now been announced as the new CM. Manik Saha is a dentist by profession and his image is considered very clean. Manik is not considered to be of any camp in BJP.

Deb was removed dissatisfaction among the party
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is believed to have taken this step of changing the CM in an attempt to overcome the anti-incumbency wave in Tripura indirectly and to remove any dissatisfaction among the party office-bearers. The party had adopted this strategy in many states in the past, which was successful. With Uttarakhand’s chief ministerial change betting successful, top BJP leaders have opted for a similar change in Tripura, where elections are due early next year.
