On this day in the year 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher. Butcher was the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. After taking command of the army, KM Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. This day is celebrated every year as 'Army Day' to commemorate Cariappa taking over as the top commander of the Indian Army.
