West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhard will be the new Vice President of the country. She has won the vice presidential election defeating her rival and opposition candidate Margaret Alva. Dhankhar got 528 votes. Out of which 15 votes were invalid. The Election Commission held a press conference and formally announced his name. However, from the beginning, there were speculations about the victory of NDA candidate Dhankhar. A total of 725 out of 780 MPs exercised their franchise for the election of the Vice President in Parliament on Saturday. 34 MPs from TMC, two from SP and Shiv Sena and one from BSP abstained from voting. The polling continued till 5 pm and the counting started an hour later i.e. from 6 pm.

The race for the post of Vice President is also over. NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the next Vice President of the country. He defeated the joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a large margin. Many leaders including PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated him on becoming the Vice President. A celebration was held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi on his becoming vice-president. BJP workers were seen dancing with drums.

A total of 55 MPs did not exercise their right to vote for the election of the Vice President. In which 34 TMC MPs were involved. However, two TMC MPs participated in the polls despite party chief Mamata Banerjee’s order. These names belong to Shishir and Divyendu Adhikari. Apart from this, two MPs from SP and Shiv Sena and one MP from BSP also did not vote. Two BJP MPs – Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dhotre – also abstained from voting due to health reasons.

PM Modi gave the first vote

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast his first vote after reaching Parliament House. Apart from PM Modi, former PM Manmohan Singh reached the wheel chair and cast his vote. Congress and ruling party MPs including Sonia Gandhi voted.

Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?

Born in a farming family in a remote Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Jagdeep Dhankhar’s journey to becoming the Vice President is quite interesting. Jagdeep Dhankhar first reached Parliament from Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan in 1989 as a member of the Janata Dal Party. During this time he served as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. In 1993, he reached Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh in Ajmer district. In the year 2019, he was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal by the Central Government.
