India will initially import Sputnik V, but later it will be able to be manufactured in the country itself. Currently, a vaccination campaign is being carried out across the country through Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in India and produced by the Serum Institute. With the arrival of Sputnik V, the country’s dependence on these two vaccines will be reduced. Currently 70 million shots of both these vaccines are being produced in the country every month.

Claims to be more effective than Covishield and Covaxin.

The Drug Controller General of India gave this approval only after Sputnik V was found completely safe. India is the 60th country in the world to approve this vaccine. Prior to India, this vaccine has been approved in 59 countries around the world. Sputnik-V is considered more effective than Kovishield and Kovaxin. Gamalaya Research Institute of Russia claims that Sputnik V is effective up to 91.6 percent, while Covishield is said to be 80 percent effective and Covaxin is up to 81 percent effective. Its first dose can give 87.6 percent protection. In addition, this vaccine is also said to be very effective for the elderly over 60 years of age.
