Not only India, impact on the whole world, Marco Rubio’s big statement on America’s new immigration policy
New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while defending the new immigration policy of the Trump administration, has clearly said that this decision was not taken only keeping India in mind, but is part of a broader reform process applicable to the entire world. In an interview given after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Rubio said that America is making major changes towards making its immigration system more systematic and effective.
Rubio said that America has faced a serious migrant crisis in the last few years. He claimed that more than 2 crore illegal immigrants entered America and the green card system was misused on a large scale. For this reason, the Trump administration has decided to make the immigration process more stringent.
Is this not a decision against India?
Marco Rubio said in the interview, this is not about India, this is a matter related to the whole world. America has decided that it has to make its immigration system more organized and better. He admitted that initial problems and inconveniences arise while implementing any new system, but he claimed that in the future, this system will prove to be more stable, faster and effective.
What changed in the green card process?
According to the new guidelines of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, now most of the immigrants applying for Green Card will have to return to their country and apply from there. Earlier, many foreign citizens used to complete the adjustment of status process while living in America, but now this process will be considered an exception. From now on, any foreign national living temporarily in the US who wants a green card will normally have to return to their home country and apply, except in exceptional circumstances, said USCIS spokesman Jack Kahler.
Every application will be strictly scrutinized
USCIS has clarified that now cases of status adjustment while staying within the US will be rigorously investigated on an individual level. The agency said in its policy document that students, temporary workers and tourists come to America for a limited period and for specific purposes. In such a situation, their entry should not be considered as the first step in the green card process. The new policy is expected to have the biggest impact on Indian citizens, because Indians have the highest number of H-1B visa holders and employment-based green card applicants in America.
The new system will be beneficial for Indians
However, Marco Rubio claimed that in the long run this change will prove beneficial for Indian applicants as well. He said, Indians who want to come to America will get a more effective and efficient system in the future. During the meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Seva Tirtha in New Delhi, Rubio also invited him to visit the White House on behalf of US President Donald Trump.
