Delhi: In the first Test played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, West Indies performed brilliantly against New Zealand and achieved a memorable draw. They had got the target of 531 runs. In the last two days, West Indies saved the match by batting 163.3 overs. Shai Hope, Justin Greaves and Kemar Roach saved the team from defeat. After scoring only 167 runs in the first innings, no one was expecting that West Indies would be able to save the match.

West Indies made a historic draw

New Zealand scored 466/8 runs in the second innings and set a target of 531 runs for West Indies. In the last innings, West Indies were stuck at 72/4 and it seemed that New Zealand would register victory. But Hope, Greaves and Roach stood up for the team and fought brilliantly. Twice in the final session, New Zealand had chances to get wickets, but the umpire did not give a decision and the team did not even have any review.

Shai Hope scored 140 runs. Justin Greaves and Kemar Roach remained unbeaten. The seventh wicket partnership between Roach and Greaves took 409 balls, of which Roach played 233 balls. Till the last day, it seemed that West Indies could press for victory, but they played a safe game to end the match in a draw.

  • Second longest batting in the fourth innings to save a Test draw in this century.
  • Longest partnership under the fifth wicket in the fourth innings.
  • Justin Greaves became the fourth West Indian player to score a double century in the fourth innings.
  • Kemar Roach became the first tailender to save a Test draw by playing more than 200 balls in the fourth innings.
