The Congress on Friday criticized the government over an International Labor Organization report pointing to wage inequality in India and claimed it was a direct result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's “pakoda-nomics” which is selling 'pakodas' to the common people. 'And for the select few it is about 'Halwa'.

Congress general secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said the International Labor Organization's recently released Global Wage Report 2024-2025 has some worrying findings about pay inequality in India.

Citing the report, he said India's top 10 percent income earners earn 6.8 times more than the bottom 10 percent earners. “It is significantly more unequal than almost every country in our neighborhood, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar,” Ramesh said in a post on X.

Citing the report, he said India has the lowest share of wage workers among all lower-middle income countries. Ramesh said most workers are engaged in self-employment, which is generally informal, low-paid and highly volatile. The Congress leader said, “Remember this is a direct result of the pakoda-nomics created by the non-organic PM. Pakodas for the masses, halwa for the select few!” The Congress has been attacking the government over the way it is handling the economy and raising concerns over “rising” unemployment, price rise and “rising income inequality”.
