Premier League 2024/25: Tottenham walk past Manchester City as Pep Guardiola loses five in a row

New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur continued their dominating display against big teams this season as they moved past reigning champions Manchester City at Emirates with a 4-0 win. Both teams had come off disappointing performances before the long international break. While Tottenham gave Ispwich town their first win, Man City lost four games back-to-back across competitions, including two consecutive games in the Premier League.

The loss marks their first at Etihad in 52 games as they failed to cope with the constant breaching of their defence, and the 4-0 loss marks their fifth loss in a row across competitions. Pep Guardiola had no answer to how Tottenham held off City despite looking threatening at the start of play. This is both City’s and Pep’s lowest point, with the Spanish manager never having lost more than three games in a row.

Having recently extended his contract with the club, Guardiola’s crisis at City have only increased. With a side that is losing some of its key players, including Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, the team looked scattered, especially in the midfield region. Critics have questioned City’s recruitment with many pointing out to the aging squad.

City finished the first half on a backfoot, with Tottenham taking advantage early on. Despite starting quick-paced, City just fell behind as the first half went on and were 2-0 behind the visitors. Erling Haaland, though, created chances for his side, but he couldn’t finish well. Man City conceded early again. James Maddison broke the deadlock after Dejan Kulusevski served a perfect cross from the right. Maddison receives the ball in the six-yard box and guides the ball into the left-hand post.

Just seven minutes later, Maddison scored his brace, and City lost the ball deep in their half. Heung-Min Son made an accurate pass to Maddison, who silenced the Emirates crowd. After action resumed, Pedro Porro joined the goal fest, driving onto the left side of the goalpost after picking up Dominic Solanke’s pass from the edge of the area. The final goal of the evening came from Brenan Johnson’s boot as Tottenham wrapped up a 4-0 win and improving their record against City.

Player of the Match

It was a special performance from the birthday boy, who scored his brace within 20 minutes of kick-off. Maddison’s early attacks on the already weak City defence were enough to silence the crowd at Emirates. From there on, City never looked confident in regaining control over the game.

Though City created many chances throughout the game, they were under pressure. The English footballer was able to push City back after the hosts looked dangerous during the early minutes of the game. The way he threaded through the field ensured that Tottenham went into the break with full control of the game.
