Uproar in Bihar Assembly over prepaid meter issue, winter session disrupted on last day
Patna : On Friday, the last day of the winter session of the Bihar Assembly, the proceedings of the House were disrupted for almost half a day when opposition members created a ruckus in the middle of the House demanding withdrawal of prepaid electricity meters. Opposition members, speaking to reporters later, alleged that House Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav could have ordered an adjournment of “only 10 minutes”, but he chose to adjourn the proceedings till after lunch “to save the government”. Opted for.
Due to the uproar, the meeting was adjourned till 2 pm. Congress MLA Ajit Sharma, raising this issue during the Question Hour, said that smart prepaid electricity meters have become a cause of trouble for the people. He said that the electricity bill is becoming so high that not only the poor but also the middle class people are finding it difficult to bear the expense. He also said “The House should constitute a committee to thoroughly investigate any irregularities in the installation of such meters and suggest appropriate action.”
What did the CPI (ML) MLA say?
CPI (ML) legislature party leader Mehboob Alam said, “Why did the Speaker adjourn the House proceedings till 2 pm? If their intention was to restore order, they could have done so for 10 minutes. It seems that he has done this to save the government which is in the dock on the issue of prepaid meters.” He said, “The prepaid meters were introduced during the tenure of tainted IAS officer Sanjeev Hans, who is now in jail and facing an ED probe. In such a situation, all such meters should be immediately taken back otherwise, Power Minister Bijendra Yadav will be suspected of complicity in the corrupt racket.”
Opposition members were clearly miffed by Yadav's taunt, who said inside the House, “As long as you were in power with us, you all were fine with smart meters. But after being out of power, you all have changed your opinion.” Alam, who was present with RJD MLA Bhai Virendra, also said, “We will continue to raise this issue. Today may be the last day of the winter session, but we are going to take to the streets. We will call for a statewide bandh to emphasize our demand, which is actually the demand of the people of Bihar.
