The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a second consecutive defeat at the Tokyo Olympics. It was defeated by Germany 2-0 on Monday. The team under the captaincy of Rani Rampal made constant efforts but could not get success. Earlier, she had to face a crushing 1-5 defeat to the world number-1 team Netherlands.
Germany took the lead in the opening quarter itself when Nike Lorenz scored from a penalty corner in the 12th minute. However, in the opening sixth minute, the Indian team tried and tried to enter the circle as well but without success. By the end of the first quarter, Germany retained the lead. In the second quarter, both the teams made continuous efforts but could not get success. By half time the score was 1-0 in favor of Germany.
Germany once again put pressure in the third quarter and scored the second goal to make the score 2-0. Anne Schröder scored Germany’s second goal in the 35th minute of the match. Earlier, India got the first penalty corner in the 32nd minute but could not convert it into a goal, which was saved by the German team. Rani also asked for a video referral after which Gurjit Kaur could not even score on the penalty stroke.
Germany showed an aggressive game in the fourth and final quarter. Meanwhile, India suffered another setback when Sharmila was shown the yellow card in the 51st minute of the match. She had to be out of the field for five minutes. Earlier, the Indian women’s hockey team had to face a 1-5 defeat against the Netherlands. Now the team captained by Rani Rampal will next face Britain.
