Tilak will soon play all three formats for India: Rohit

MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is heavily influenced by middle-order left-hander Tilak Verma and is confident that he will play all three formats for India soon. Rohit said that he has both technique and mindset and he enters the field with a very calm mind.

Tilak played for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, in which India was runner-up. He was bought by Mumbai Indians in 2022 and he did wonders in his very first IPL season. Amidst the team’s poor performance, the 19-year-old Tilak has so far scored 386 runs in 12 innings, which is the best IPL performance by any batsman under 20 years. He broke the record held by Rishabh Pant, who had scored 366 runs in 2017. Currently Tilak is the seventh highest run-scorer in this season.

After the victory over Chennai Super Kings, Rohit heaped praise on Tilak. He said, “What he is doing in the first year itself is amazing. At this age, he has shown mentality and has played cricket with a very calm mind. I think he will play all three formats for India very soon. When you talk to them, it comes to know that they have a hunger to do something good and get success. He is on the right track, he just has to keep going on this path. Rohit said that his team may have been ruled out this season, but now he is preparing for the future in the remaining matches. In the same sequence, South African young player Tristan Stubbs was given a chance in the match against Chennai.

“We are definitely looking forward to the future, but we want to end the tournament with a win,” Rohit said. Now we have two more matches, we can try some more options in that. Kieron Pollard had to sit outside to give Stubbs a chance. Rohit said that it was not an easy decision. Rohit said, Pollard is like a warrior for Mumbai Indians. But he himself came forward and said that he is ready to sit out of the XI as the team is looking to try other options. Had we not been out of the tournament, it probably wouldn’t have happened. But as we prepare for next year, we have to look at other options.
