Sridevi’s biggest flop film, director quit midway, got delayed for six years, producer sold assets to clear debts, earned only Rs…
After the humongous success of Mr India, producer Boney Kapoor thought of making another big project, which later turned out to be a biggest flop in Sridevi’s career.
The film industry is often a gamble, where unexpected successes and shocking failures often go hand-in-hand. Some movies, usually underestimated, turn into sleep hits, while others with massive budget and star-studded cast, fail miserably at the box office. Today, we will talk about one such case- the most expensive film of the late 80s and early 90s. The movie was made by the same team that created history. However, when released, it turned out to be the biggest flop in the careers of Sridevi and Anil Kapoor. Yes, we are talking about The queen of beauty is the king of thieves.
After the humongous success of Mr India, producer Boney Kapoor thought of making another big project with the same team. He produced Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, inspired by Duchess and The Dirtwater Fox. The film brought the same team-director Shekhar Kapur , actor Anil Kapoor and actress Sridevi together.
The movie went on floors in 1987. However, it faced numerous setbacks and was delayed by six years. Among the challenges, Shekhar Kapur left the project midway, citing a lack of depth in the story. He was replaced by his assistant, the late actor-turned-director Satish Kaushik.
Due to production delays, the cost of the film kept on increasing, and by the time it was completed, the film went over budget. Reportedly, it was considered the most expensive films of that time. Made in Rs 10 crore, the film managed to earn just Rs 3 crore. Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja opened with an unfavourable response and received negative reviews from the audience and critics. It was critiscied for the inclusion of too many songs, poor storyline and runtime.
As per reports, producer Boney Kapoor had to sell most of his assets to clear debts. In an interview with The New Indian Express, Kapoor recalled that his wife Mona Shourie supported him after his film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja failed at the box office. She walked Siddhivinayak Temple barefoot to pray for him.
