Stampede over free flour in Pakistan, many injured


Islamabad. A woman and a man were killed and several others injured in stampedes at flour distribution centers in various cities of Pakistan. According to the report of The News, people protested fiercely against the government regarding the distribution of flour.

The first stampede took place in Sahiwal when a large number of people had come to collect free flour and women were also standing in long queues.

The News reported that as time went on, the crowd grew impatient, leading to a stampede and everyone trying to get the flour bag.

As a result, a woman died in the stampede, while 46 others were injured.

Meanwhile Sahiwal Deputy Commissioner and District Police Officer reached the spot.

There are also reports of police lathi-charging those demanding flour, reports The News.

A 73-year-old man was crushed to death in Rahim Yar Khan while several others were injured in a rush to get free flour.

According to a report in The News, women staged a sit-in protest against the alleged atrocities on an old woman at the Government Graduate Boys’ College in Jhang at the place of distribution of flour. Women allege that discriminatory attitude is being adopted by the employees while distributing flour bags.

Protests and scuffles over the supply of free government wheat flour were witnessed at various places in Peshawar as the city police expressed their helplessness in controlling the situation, The Express Tribune reported.

On not getting free flour, the protestors blocked the Kohat road, leading to traffic jam.

They complained that they had to wait in long queues all day and yet returned home empty-handed and claimed that flour was being distributed keeping political affiliations in mind on the basis of nepotism.

According to a report in The Express Tribune, complaints about not getting free government flour are increasing with each passing day.

He said that across the province, especially in its southern districts, a large number of women gather at distribution points to collect free flour, making it difficult for the police to manage the situation.

At least five women were injured in a stampede at a free flour distribution center in southern Punjab’s Haispur tehsil.
