Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Tilak Varma Scripts T20 World Record with Mammoth 151 | Read
Mumbai: Hyderabad’s captain, Tilak Varma, shattered multiple records with an astonishing 151-run innings against Meghalaya in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Saturday.
Tilak became the first player to achieve three consecutive T20 centuries and recorded the highest individual T20 score by an Indian in Hyderabad’s SMAT debut at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
His explosive 151 from just 67 deliveries not only established a formidable total of 248/4 for Hyderabad but also set multiple records. His score now stands as the highest individual total in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s history, eclipsing Shreyas Iyer’s 147. This feat also marks him as the first Indian male to score 150 or more in a T20 match, cementing his status as one of the game’s most promising talents.
Batting at number three, Tilak Varma decimated the Meghalaya bowling with a stunning 151 off 67 balls, including 14 fours and 10 sixes. Combining precision with power, he reached his fifty in 28 balls and his century in 51, driving Hyderabad to one of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s highest totals ever, 248/4.
Following his back-to-back T20I centuries for India earlier in the month in Centurion and Johannesburg against South Africa, Tilak’s consistency in T20 cricket is unparalleled. His consecutive T20I hundreds place him with Sanju Samson as the only two Indians to reach this milestone. Approaching the 3,000-run mark in T20 cricket, the young batsman now has four T20 centuries, underscoring his knack for delivering in crucial matches.
Tilak’s recent exploits have earned him international recognition, especially his performance in the South Africa series, where he was named Player of the Series and rose to third place in the rankings.
