When will the 200 units free electricity scheme be implemented? Tamil Nadu government announced, 1 crore people will get benefits

Tamil Nadu Government Announces Initiative: TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Soon after becoming the Chief Minister, he had promised to provide 200 units of free electricity to all the consumers of Tamil Nadu. Now good news has also come out about when the free electricity scheme will be implemented.

The Tamil Nadu government’s extended free electricity scheme for domestic consumers will come into effect from the next billing cycle. This will be implemented as soon as TNPDCL completes the necessary updates to its billing software to implement the revised policy of the Government. This step will provide relief to lakhs of families across the state. Under this scheme, the number of consumers paying zero electricity bills is expected to increase significantly.

These provisions will be included

According to an official notice issued by the Accounts Branch of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNDPCL) to field-level chief engineers, the billing software has been updated to include provisions related to checking of eligibility, calculation of subsidy, bill generation and accounting under the revised scheme.

The government has also directed senior officials to ensure that field staff are fully aware of the implementation process, so that when the next billing cycle starts, eligible consumers can get the benefits without any delay.

Free electricity scheme expanded

This decision has been taken as the first major policy initiative of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after assuming office. Under this scheme, such domestic consumers, whose electricity consumption does not exceed 500 units every two months, will get up to 200 units of free electricity.

Let us inform you that there are about 2.46 crore domestic electricity consumers in Tamil Nadu. Of these, there are about 67 lakh consumers who use less than 100 units of electricity every two months. They are already getting free electricity and do not have to pay any charges. This scheme has been expanded to 200 units. Now the number of families getting zero electricity bill will increase rapidly. This number is expected to reach approximately 1.2 crore consumers.

The process started from May 10

The revised subsidy structure is also expected to benefit another 85.83 lakh consumers, whose electricity bills are likely to reduce by about Rs 235 every two months starting from the next billing cycle. However, about 34.24 lakh consumers, whose electricity consumption is more than 500 units per billing cycle, will continue to get the benefit of only the existing 100 free units.

Officials said the process of upgrading the software was started immediately after the government’s announcement on May 10, to ensure that the scheme can be implemented without any disruption in the upcoming billing cycle.

The extended free electricity scheme is being seen as a major welfare measure aimed at reducing household expenditure, especially for low and middle income families. TNPDCL officials have said that this initiative is part of a policy decision of the government and the financial burden arising from the extension of subsidy will be borne by the state government.
