The blame is going to fall on Surya, not Ajit Agarkar but Gambhir will give the final decision.
The future of Indian T20 team captain Suryakumar Yadav is in danger. Not only is Surya going to lose his captaincy, but he is also being considered to be dropped from the team. Surya, who is 35 years old, has been struggling with poor form for a long time. A senior source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told news agency PTI that the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar is not completely sure that Surya will be able to make his place in the team as a batsman. However, the final decision will be taken by Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir.
It is believed within the BCCI that the selection committee is now in favor of moving on from Surya (removing him from the team) but top officials of the board also believe that the coordination between the coach and the captain is very important for the dressing-room environment. In such a situation, Gambhir’s feeling comfortable with Surya will make him an important person in this final decision.

Surya flopped in IPL also
For the last one year, questions have been continuously raised about Surya’s place in the team. At present, it is understood that all five selectors broadly believe that the current T20 captain should be dropped from the playing XI. This opinion has been gaining momentum since the excitement of the victory in the T20 World Cup cooled down. According to PTI, the selectors have now started looking at the future of Indian cricket from a broader perspective, rather than focusing on the brilliance of any one tournament.
A senior BCCI source told PTI, ‘Initially the selectors felt that IPL would help Surya regain his form, as happened last season when he had scored more than 700 runs, but surprisingly, there has been no technical improvement in his game.’
The source further said, ‘Even the most inexperienced fast bowlers are bowling straight and fast balls and they have no answer to it. The selectors do not think that he will be able to play in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It’s just that.’

Will Gambhir end ‘brotherhood’ with Surya?
Surya, playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, has been able to score only 210 runs in 12 innings. The source said, ‘If someone cannot cement his place in the team just as a batsman, then how can he become a captain? Therefore, it is difficult to keep him in the team but Agarkar and Gambhir will have to be on the same opinion.
The real problem lies here. Gambhir is not in the habit of working as a head coach in name only. People who are familiar with his way of working say that in whatever team he commands, the final decision is often his. More importantly, his relationship with Surya has always been very good. This means that if Gambhir supports Surya and vetoes the decision to drop him from the team, the selection committee may have to postpone that decision. Now it remains to be seen what decision Gambhir takes.
