‘This film will spread hatred’; Shashi Tharoor criticizes sequel to 2023’s most controversial film, says…
Controversy has started once again in Indian politics and film industry. Ahead of the release of the upcoming film ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’, the senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has launched a strong attack on its makers. Tharoor alleged that like the first film, the sequel is also promoting hate-mongering and divisive narratives in the society without any solid facts. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Tharoor termed the first film ‘The Kerala Story’ as a hate film. He said that the claims of mass conversion in the original film have no real basis.
According to Shashi Tharoor, the figures presented in the film were far from the truth and exaggerated. He clarified, “The claim of thousands of people converting to Islam is completely false. The reality is that only 30 such incidents have been reported in the last few years. India is a very big country and it is wrong to use isolated incidents as propaganda to make a big, scary story.” In his statement, Shashi Tharoor also expressed concern about the changing nature of cinema. Citing the example of the famous film “Amar Akbar Anthony”, he said that the film celebrated communal harmony and unity, which at that time got entertainment tax exemption. He questioned the justification of saying things that spread poison in people’s minds and have nothing to do with reality

The movie “The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond” is slated to hit the theaters on February 27, 2026. The recently released trailer is based on the theme of religious conversion and radicalization that takes place in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala. The makers of the film claim that it exposes the harsh truth of targeted radicalism. In their promotional material, the makers used harsh words, “They targeted our girls and broke their trust. This time we will not remain silent; the story will go further. This time we will not tolerate it…we will fight.”
