New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has allowed unmarried women to apply for the National Defense Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy exams. This information was given in an official statement on Friday.
The commission said that last month the Supreme Court had given a direction in this regard, in compliance with which this step has been taken.
The statement said that in compliance with the interim direction of the apex court, UPSC has decided to place applications for this examination on its website for ‘only unmarried female candidates’ who fulfill the criteria like nationality, age, educational qualification etc. Descends.
It was told that the information about the physical criteria and number of vacancies for female candidates will be given after getting it from the Ministry of Defense. Unmarried female candidates can apply on the UPSC website from September 24 to October 8 at 6 pm.
The statement said that female candidates applying for this exam are not required to pay the fee. This exam will be held on November 14.
On August 18, the Supreme Court had allowed eligible women to appear in the NDA exam.
The interim order was passed by a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy on a plea by advocate Kush Kalra, where he raised the issue of non-recruitment of eligible women on the basis of gender in the NDA for alleged violation of the fundamental right to equality. Told.
It was said in the petition that the authorities have allowed 12th pass unmarried male candidates to appear for the National Defense Academy and Naval Academy examination but qualified and willing female candidates are not allowed to take the examination on the basis of their gender only and for this There is no logical or just explanation in the Constitution.
After this, earlier this month, the central government told the Supreme Court that the armed forces had decided to recruit women in the NDA.
Although the Center had also requested the apex court to allow women candidates to appear in the NDA entrance examination from next year, the court rejected it, saying the apex court does not want women to be deprived of their rights.
