In response, America says that India is the number one priority for America (in terms of granting visas).

US Visa: According to the US State Department website, the waiting time for applicants living in Mumbai is 999 days, while it is 994 days for applicants from Hyderabad. Chennaiites have to wait 948 days for an appointment for a US visa, while Keralites have to wait 904 days. Explain that in September, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited America and during that time he raised the issue of backlog of visa applications in front of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. On this issue, a top American diplomat said that they are very sensitive on this issue and they are facing a similar situation all over the world, which is a challenge due to Covid.

According to a senior US embassy official, the waiting period for issuing US visas is likely to come down by the summer of 2023 and the number of visa applications is expected to reach around 1.2 million. The official said that India is the number one priority for the US (in terms of issuing visas). Our target is to bring the situation back to pre-Covid-19 levels by the middle of next year.

India is one of the few countries that has seen a significant jump in applications for US visas following the lifting of travel restrictions related to the coronavirus. The official said that in view of the long time taken to issue visas, the US is taking several initiatives, including hiring more personnel and increasing the ‘drop box’ facility. He said that there is a plan to issue about one lakh visas every month. The US has issued around 82,000 visas in the last one year.
