VanDyke case likely to be raised by Marco Rubio

The detention of US national Matthew VanDyke is expected to emerge as a sensitive issue during high-level India-United States engagements this week, with people familiar with developments indicating that the matter will feature during interactions involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his India visit.

Rubio has arrived in India primarily to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 26th May, where the United States, India, Japan and Australia are expected to discuss Indo-Pacific developments, strategic coordination and broader regional priorities. His visit also includes bilateral engagements focused on trade, energy and defence cooperation.

According to inputs received by Read, including from persons connected to the family, VanDyke’s detention has become the subject of sustained outreach efforts in Washington. Multiple people associated with the family are understood to be engaging political, diplomatic and policy circles in an effort to secure greater U.S. intervention and push for his release.

Family members have also alleged that attempts by officials linked to the U.S. Embassy to obtain access to meet and speak with VanDyke had not succeeded. They have stated that the issue is expected to be brought to the attention of senior U.S. leadership before Rubio’s arrival in India.

Separately, sources indicated that the matter has already moved into diplomatic channels. It is understood that U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has raised concerns linked to the case with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, although the nature and outcome of those conversations could not be independently confirmed at the time of publication.

People familiar with the outreach effort said the campaign around the case has become more organised in recent weeks, with friends and associates of VanDyke’s family in Washington attempting to elevate the matter beyond routine consular engagement and into the broader political and diplomatic conversation ahead of the India visit.

Matthew VanDyke was arrested under India’s anti-terror framework on allegations linked to a wider conspiracy involving cross-border militant activity and drone operations. Investigators alleged that he, along with other foreign nationals, entered India on tourist visas, travelled to restricted areas in the Northeast, crossed into Myanmar without required permissions, and provided drone-related training to Myanmar-based ethnic armed groups that Indian agencies say have links relevant to security concerns in Northeast India.

The case has been registered under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including allegations of participation in a terrorist conspiracy.
