What is JAAC: Why violence broke out in PoK, Pakistan openly fired on Kashmiris

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is once again burning in the fire of violence. After the ban on Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), massive protests have started in the area. So far, more than 30 people have died in this violence and more than 200 people are reported to be injured. Along with this, a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs of India has also come out in which they have condemned Pakistan. With this, let us understand in 10 points why violence is happening in POK and what is the whole controversy regarding JAAC?

What is JAAC?

Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) i.e. Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee is a socio-political platform, which was established in 2023. This includes businessmen, lawyers, students, transporters and people from civil society. This organization calls itself the voice of common Kashmiris. Let us further tell you on which issues the bloodshed has started in Pakistan.

Understand the reason for many problems in 10 points

  1. JAAC initially raised issues of rising electricity rates, inflation, expensive flour, poor administration and local rights. The organization alleges that resources are taken from the people of PoK but they do not get the benefits.
  2. In the last two years, JAAC organized several major bandhs, strikes and demonstrations. Due to these movements, Pakistan and PoK government had to hold talks several times. Gradually this organization became very popular among the general public.
  3. JAAC never tried to contest elections. Its strength has not been electoral politics but the people taking to the streets. This is the reason why many people started considering it as an alternative to traditional political parties.
  4. In June 2026, the Pakistan administration declared JAAC a banned organization under the anti-terrorism law. The government says that the activities of the organization were posing a threat to law and order and security.
  5. This is the biggest question. The ban on JAAC was imposed at a time when the nomination process for PoK assembly elections was starting. Critics say that the administration took this step due to fear of increasing public support.
  6. One of the most controversial demands of JAAC is the abolition of 12 refugee seats in the Assembly. The organization alleges that the mainstream parties of Pakistan influence the politics of PoK through these seats. This issue became the biggest conflict between the government and JAAC.
  7. Thousands of people took to the streets after the alleged shooting death of a businessman in Rawalakot. JAAC supporters started protesting. After this there was a clash between the security forces and the protesters which soon turned into violent clashes.
  8. JAAC supporters and local people allege that the security forces opened fire to stop the protesters. The organization claims that the death toll has reached 35. The administration says that the protesters also used weapons and petrol bombs. Both sides are accusing each other of violence.
  9. Experts believe that this is not a matter of ban on just one organization. This is a sign of growing political discontent, economic crisis and demand for representation in PoK. The ban on JAAC may weaken the organization, but the issues that gave rise to it are still present. This is the reason why bigger political conflicts may be seen in PoK in the coming times.
  10. Regarding the violence taking place in POK, the Ministry of External Affairs said that serious reports of police brutality are coming from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, in which many people have died and a large number of people have been injured. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “There have been reports of brutal police action in PoK, in which several people have been killed and many injured. We hope the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for its actions and human rights violations.” This statement of India has come at a time when massive protests are taking place in PoK after the ban on Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). In recent days, there have been reports of many people killed and hundreds injured in clashes between protesters and security forces.
