“When seniors don’t understand but..”: India coach reveals Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin’s reaction after getting dropped from Playing XI in Perth Test

India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar discussed the exclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja from the playing XI for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia in Perth. He said that both seniors understood the team’s needs and why tough decisions are sometimes made.

He mentioned that it could be a problem for some of the players, but Ashwin and Jadeja were welcoming as they knew the team comes first.

“It becomes tough when seniors don’t understand, but Jaddu and Ash are different as they have always kept the team ahead of themselves. This is the policy captain Rohit and coach Gambhir also believe in,” Nayar said.

Jadeja and Ashwin have taken 855 Test wickets together, but in overseas matches, Jadeja often gets the preference because of his batting.

However, the team management opted for Washington Sundar in the Perth Test, citing his form and ability to perform with the bat on bouncy pitches.

Nayar believes the two spinners are at ease. “They are helping the young players. It wasn’t hard to talk to them about their exclusion. Everyone wants India to win,” he added.

“Nobody is out of the game, and you can contribute in different ways even if you are not playing. You always have a chance to come back.”
