New DelhiSpeaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on electoral reforms, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said, first I want to ask three questions, which will make it clear that the BJP is directing and using the Election Commission to harm India’s democracy, He said, why is it that the CJI was removed from the selection panel of the Election Commissioner? Rahul Gandhi further said, I sit in that room. This is a so-called democratic decision. On one side PM Narendra Modi and HM Amit Shah. On the other hand, opposition leaders. I have no voice in that room. Whatever they decide happens. So, why are the Prime Minister and Amit Shah so keen to choose who will be the Election Commissioner?

“It is devastating,” he said. No Prime Minister has done this in the history of India. In December 2023, this government changed the law. He changed the law to ensure that no Election Commissioner could be punished for any action taken by him while he was the Election Commissioner. Why would the Prime Minister and the Home Minister give this gift of exemption to the Election Commissioner? Why would he need to give this tremendous gift to the Election Commissioner which no Prime Minister has ever given before?

The leader of the opposition further said, why was the law changed regarding CCTV and the data contained in it? Why was a law made that allows the Election Commission to destroy CCTV footage 45 days after elections? What is the need? The answer was that it is a question of data. But it is not a question of data. This is a question of stealing elections.
