Wicked 3 Gets Promising Update from Stephen Schwartz

Stephen Schwartz has offered a promising update regarding Wicked 3.

Wicked is the popular 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman that is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. That novel is a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book, which was famously turned into the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland.

Wicked has now been adapted into two movies: 2024’s Wicked and 2025’s Wicked: For Good, the latter of which is currently playing in United States theaters. Both movies are directed by Jon M. Chu and star Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland.

While Wicked: For Good adapts the second act of the musical, there’s been much talk about whether or not the franchise will continue with a potential third movie at some point in the future.

What did Stephen Schwartz say about Wicked 3?

Speaking with The Hollywood ReporterSchwartz said that it might be “a little premature” to start discussing plans for Wicked 3; however, he did note that it was “not that premature.”

He continued, “It is not a Wicked sequel, but it is a story which, if it goes ahead, occurs within the world of Oz…It’s so early, I’m hesitating to say anything about it, because who knows if it’ll even go forward.”

Universal Pictures chief marketing officer Michael Moses also recently told Vulture about continuing the Wicked franchise, “Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe. At this time, another Wicked movie has not yet been officially announced by Universal Pictures. The film is currently available to stream on Peacock.
