Ekadashi Tithi is considered the most important of all Tithis in Hinduism. There is a law of fasting on the Ekadashi date of Krishna and Shukla Paksha of every month. It is told in the scriptures that by worshiping Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi Tithi and observing fast, the devotees get freedom from all sins. According to the Hindu calendar, the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month is called Papmochani Ekadashi. This year this fast will be observed on 18 March 2023, a Saturday.
It has been said in the scriptures that knowingly or unknowingly a man commits some such sins, due to which he has to suffer punishment in this life and in the next life. In such a situation, to avoid these sins, Papmochani Ekadashi fast is considered very important. Let us know the importance of Papmochani Ekadashi fast and its rules.
Significance of Papamochani Ekadashi fast
It has been told in religious texts and Puranas that by observing Ekadashi fast, all the pains and sorrows of a person go away. On the other hand, by observing Papmochani Ekadashi fast, the seeker gets rid of the mistakes made unknowingly and he gets the virtue equal to Sahastra Godan i.e. 1000 Godan. Just as Lord Shri Ram was accused of killing Brahma after killing Ravana and he had bathed and meditated in Kapal Mochan Tirtha to get rid of this defect. In the same way, worshiping Lord Vishnu on the day of Papmochani Ekadashi removes all kinds of defects.
Papamochani Ekadashi fast rules
It has been said in the scriptures that in order to get freedom from the sins committed knowingly and unknowingly, the seeker should keep a waterless fast on the day of Papmochani Ekadashi. If the person’s health is not good, then he can keep fruit or water fast. Before keeping Nirjala fast, only Satvik food should be taken on Dashami Tithi and on Ekadashi Tithi, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped according to law. It has also been told in the scriptures that on the day of Papmochani Ekadashi, by staying awake and worshiping Lord Vishnu, the seeker gets freedom from the sins of this birth as well as the previous birth.
