Union Cabinet gives status of classical languages ​​to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali

Latest News :- The Center has given the status of classical languages ​​to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali. In this regard, a press release issued by the Central Government said, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved giving the status of classical languages ​​to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali languages. This decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On 12 October 2004, the central government decided to create a new category of languages, 'Semozhai'. Accordingly, Tamil was declared an official language for the first time in 2004. Since then, Sanskrit (2005), Telugu (2008), Kannada (2008), Malayalam (2013) and Oriya (2014) have been granted classical language status.

In this context, a proposal was received from the Government of Maharashtra in 2013 demanding classical language status for Marathi. It was referred to the Linguistic Experts Committee (LEC). This was under consideration for a long time. In such a situation, assembly elections are going to be held in Maharashtra at the end of this year. The status of classical language to Marathi language has been a big issue in the election field and the central government has given the status of classical language to Marathi language.

Along with this, recommendations were also received from the states of Bihar, Assam and West Bengal to give classical language status to Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali. Accordingly, the Linguistics Committee (LEC) considered the requests in its meeting on July 25, 2024. On this basis, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali languages ​​have been given the status of classical languages.

Inclusion of languages ​​in classical languages ​​will create employment opportunities especially in education and research sectors. Also, preservation, documentation and digitization of ancient texts in these languages ​​will create employment opportunities in translation, publishing and digital media. This has been said in the press release of the Central Government.
