New York/Washington. More than one lakh visas, including 8,000 student visas due in 2025, have been canceled as part of a sweeping crackdown on immigrants in the US citing criminal activity. “We will continue to extradite these thugs to make America safer,” the State Department said in a post on social media on Monday.
“In a crackdown on those who flout the law for criminal activities in the US, the State Department has canceled 1,00,000 visas, including 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialty visas,” the post said.
State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that in less than a year, the Trump administration has canceled more than one lakh visas. “These include visas for thousands of foreign nationals accused or convicted of crimes such as assault, theft and drunken driving,” he said.
According to Fox News news, 40 thousand visas were canceled in the last year of former President Joe Biden’s tenure i.e. 2024, compared to which more than double the number of visas were canceled in 2025. The report said that most of the people whose visas were canceled in 2025 were businessmen and tourists who had overstayed their visas.
