1 new good news regarding central government’s free ration

For crores of families in the country, the free ration scheme is not just a government scheme, but a very important part of their everyday life. In such a situation, any small or big change in the rules related to ration distribution directly affects the needs of the people and their kitchen budget. Keeping this in view seriously, the Central Government has prepared a proposal to make a major change in the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013. The main objective of this new proposal made by the government is to make the entire system of ration distribution under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) more balanced and transparent than before.

How to get ration now?

If we talk about the current system, at present all eligible poor families covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana are given a lump sum of 35 kg of food grains every month. In this current rule the total number of family members is not taken as the basis. This means that whether there are less members in a family or there are many members, in both the cases the entire family is given equal i.e. fixed quantity of 35 kg ration.

This system sometimes becomes a cause of great trouble for large families with more members. Due to this old rule, the per capita share of grains reaches small families, whereas the per capita share of grains available in large families with more members becomes much less.

What will be the change in the new proposal?

To overcome this problem, in the new draft proposal of the Central Government, it has been strongly said that now ‘individual based ration system’ will be introduced for AAY families. Under this new rule, an excellent suggestion has been made to provide 7 kg of grains every month to each member of the family. The government fully believes that this major change will bring complete equality in the system of ration distribution and even large families will be able to get more appropriate and correct benefits as per their needs.

Maximum limit of 35 kg will continue

A very important thing has also been made clear in this new proposal of the government that the maximum limit of total ration given to any one family can be fixed at 35 kg per month only. That is, the calculation for ration distribution will be done on the basis of number of members, but the upper limit of the total ration will remain fixed as before.

To understand this as a simple example, if there are a total of 3 members in an Antyodaya family, then according to the proposed new system, they get 21 kg of food grains, whereas a family with 5 or more members can get the full benefit up to its maximum limit i.e. 35 kg.

Why does the government want to change the rules?

According to official information, there are three main and important reasons behind this major change being made by the government in the rules of ration distribution:

  • To completely reduce the long standing inequality in Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).
  • To make the distribution of grains through quota and ration shops as equitable and transparent as possible.
  • To better meet the food and nutritional needs of the poor and needy people of the country.

The Central Government firmly believes that after the implementation of this new system, the entire ration system will prove to be more effective and helpful than before.

Final decision is yet to be taken

The thing to note for ration card holders is that this big change is still completely at the proposal (draft) stage. The Central Government has prepared a strong draft of this and has sought opinions and necessary suggestions from the common people of the country and all the concerned parties related to it. This amendment will be finalized only after closely reviewing these suggestions received from across the country.

If this proposal becomes law in the coming days without any hindrance, then it can be implemented in the entire country in the name of ‘National Food Security (Amendment) Act, 2026’. The exact and official date of implementation of this new law in the entire country will be announced by the Central Government later by issuing a notification.
