Supreme Court bans worship in the well near Sambhal Jama Masjid
New Delhi. The Supreme Court has banned worshiping the well located near Jama Masjid in Sambhal. By issuing a notification from the municipality, permission was given for worship, declaring it to be the well of Harihar temple. On behalf of the Mosque Committee, a demand was made to the Supreme Court to maintain the status quo in the matter. Now the court has banned the puja for the time being while seeking a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government. Also the court issued a notice and directed the Uttar Pradesh government not to take any action regarding the well till the next hearing.
The court fixed February 21 for the next hearing of the case. During the hearing of the case, the bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna said that there is no restriction on the use of the well by anyone, however, it has stayed the notification of the municipality giving permission to worship here. . This order of the court is only for the well near Jama Masjid. There is no ban on other wells and stepwells whose digging work is going on by the administration.

Additional Solicitor General K, appearing for the UP government. M. Nataraj argued that the well is on public land while the mosque side's lawyer said that half of the well is inside the mosque and half outside. While giving information in this regard, Hindu side's lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain said that the court heard the arguments of both the parties. After this, the state was directed to file a status report and we were also asked to file a counter affidavit. The court issued a notice and directed the Uttar Pradesh government not to take any action regarding the well.
