Sanjay Roy, the main accused, found guilty in the rape-murder of RG Kar Medical College trainee female doctor.
New Delhi. The court has given its verdict in the case of rape and murder of a trainee female doctor in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. Sealdah Court has convicted the main accused Sanjay Roy. On the morning of August 9, 2024, the body of a trainee female doctor was found in a mutilated condition at RG Kar Medical College, after which this case came into limelight across the country. Judge Anirban Das has convicted Sanjay Roy under sections 64 (rape), 66 (causing death) and 103 (murder) of the Indian Judicial Code. The punishment will be announced on January 20.
In protest against this heinous incident, doctors of government hospitals across the country including doctors of Kolkata RG Kar Medical College had gone on strike. Doctors from all the big institutions including Delhi AIIMS, RML had expressed their anger over the incident that happened with the trainee doctor while on duty and had raised the issue of ensuring their own safety along with the demand for justice. The doctors' strike ended when the Supreme Court formed a committee to discuss ensuring the safety of doctors while on duty and asked them to return to work. Earlier, Kolkata High Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the doctor's murder and rape case and termed it as gruesome.
In this matter, Kolkata High Court had also raised questions on the attitude of the Mamata Banerjee government of the West. Besides, Sandeep Ghosh, the then Principal of RG Kar Medical College was also severely reprimanded. Sandeep Ghosh had tried to suppress this matter, later when the controversy over it increased, the West Bengal government, instead of taking action against the principal, transferred him to another medical college. After this, the High Court sent Sandeep Ghosh on long leave and later he was dismissed. Sandeep Ghosh was also arrested in this case.
