Airfares cannot be capped for the entire year, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu said in the Lok Sabha.
New Delhi. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said in the Lok Sabha today that air fares cannot be capped for the entire year. He said that the government intervenes in this matter when necessary, but it is not practically possible to keep the same fare fixed throughout the year on a particular route. The reason behind this is that the final price of the ticket depends on the demand and supply of the market. The Aviation Minister has said this amid concerns regarding increase in fares by airlines companies during the festival season. He said that considering the passenger load during the festive season, airlines have been advised to increase the capacity. Along with expanding the flight routes, the number of flights has also been increased.

Ram Mohan Naidu said, as per the present Aircraft Act, the Central Government has the power that in exceptional circumstances, when there is a possibility of misuse of liberalization of air fares, it can intervene to rectify the situation and set a cap on fares, so that the passengers do not have to face unfair pricing at that time. To keep an eye on the prices of air tickets, DGCA has a Tariff Monitoring Unit, which sees whether the fares are being fixed as per the tariff sheet for the airlines companies or not.

The Union Minister further said, two things should go together in airfare regulation, firstly that there should be no compromise with the safety of passengers and secondly, there should be growth of the market. He said that proper solution will emerge only when the capacity is also increased along with the increase in demand. He once again said that the government has the power to impose a fair cap in exceptional circumstances but this is not a permanent solution.
