Supreme Court reprimands MCD over Delhi pollution, asks it to consider temporarily closing 9 toll plazas
New Delhi. Delhi air pollution crisis was heard today before a three-judge bench in the Supreme Court. During this time, the court has strongly reprimanded the MCD and advised to temporarily close nine toll plazas falling on different borders of Delhi and has asked it to take a decision on this within a week. The court was told that due to the jam at these toll booths, people remain stuck in traffic for hours and during this time the pollution from vehicle smoke increases. After which the bench asked to consider temporarily stopping the toll.

A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi directed NHAI to consider giving a part of the toll revenue to the MCD to compensate for any temporary loss. The Supreme Court has also asked the CAQM and NCR governments to consider issues like urban mobility and giving incentives to farmers to stop burning stubble. Describing the air pollution crisis as an annual problem, the Supreme Court has asked the CAQM to reconsider its long-term measures to deal with the problem.

Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant remarked that people shy away from attending marriage ceremonies due to traffic jams. Let us tell you that currently Grap-4 restrictions are in force in Delhi. Instructions have already been given by the government to keep all government and non-government schools from nursery to fifth class closed and to run online classes. Apart from this, work from home has been made mandatory for 50 percent of the employees in government and private offices in Delhi from tomorrow. Apart from this, from tomorrow itself, vehicles below BS-6 which are registered in other states will be banned from plying in Delhi.
