New Delhi. Since becoming the Chief Justice of India i.e. CJI, Justice Surya Kant has made many new rules related to the functioning of the Supreme Court. Now he has taken an important decision. CJI Surya Kant has said that in emergency cases, complainants can come to the Supreme Court even at midnight. According to The Times of Newspaper, CJI Surya Kant said that if a citizen faces a legal emergency or the investigating agencies threaten to arrest him at odd hours, then he will be able to appeal for a hearing in the Constitutional Court even at midnight to protect his fundamental rights and freedoms.

CJI Surya Kant said that his endeavor has always been and will be to make the Supreme Court and the High Court people’s courts. The CJI said that the courts should be such that they can be contacted at any time in case of legal emergency, even after the fixed working hours. CJI also stated his priority. Justice Surya Kant said that one of his priorities is to create more Constitution benches to deal with the pending petitions related to many important constitutional issues. He gave the example of SIR. Even before this the Supreme Court had opened late at night. When Yakub Memon’s hanging case was pending, the hearing was held in the Supreme Court till 4 in the morning.

CJI Surya Kant has stopped oral mentioning in important decisions taken till now. Now lawyers have to send a slip to the Supreme Court for immediate hearing on any issue. On which the Supreme Court Registry decides whether it should be heard immediately or not. Besides, CJI Surya Kant has also fixed the time limit for arguments for the lawyers during the hearing of the cases. Now the lawyers will have to tell for how long they will argue. CJI Surya Kant believes that with this the cases will not drag on for long and people will be able to get justice soon.
