Allahabad High Court: Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Allahabad High Court refused to hear bail applications, termed the Supreme Court’s comments as demoralizing and intimidating.

Lucknow. Following the Supreme Court’s comments regarding bail, Justice Pankaj Bhatia of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has refused to hear more bail petitions. According to Navbharat Times newspaper, Justice Pankaj Bhatia has requested the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court not to allow him to hear more bail petitions. Justice Pankaj Bhatia has said that the Supreme Court’s comments were intimidating and discouraging. The Supreme Court had made the comments while delivering its verdict on a bail plea on February 9. This bail was given by Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Allahabad High Court.

Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Allahabad High Court refused to hear the bail applications on Friday. The bail application of accused Rakesh Tiwari came before the bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia on Friday. He referred to the observations of the Supreme Court on its decision of granting bail earlier during the hearing of this application. Justice Bhatia of Allahabad High Court said that the Supreme Court rejected the bail given by him, this is normal. Justice Pankaj Bhatia said that no judge can claim that his order has never been overruled or interfered with by the higher court, but the comments of the Supreme Court in the case of Chetram Verma are demoralizing and frightening.

Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Allahabad High Court had granted bail to the accused on 10 October 2025 in the dowry death case. Plaintiff Chetram Verma had challenged the order of Justice Pankaj Bhatia in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, during the hearing of the petition, observed that the accused was in jail since July 27, 2005 and had no criminal history. Because of which Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Allahabad High Court had granted him bail. The Supreme Court, while rejecting the bail, had described the Allahabad High Court’s order as one of the most disappointing orders seen in recent times. The Supreme Court had also raised the question that what does the High Court want to say through the bail order? The Supreme Court had also said that where did the High Court use its discretion? Because he granted bail only after looking at the arguments of the defense and the period spent by the accused in jail.
