EC Action On West Bengal Officers: Election Commission has taken action against seven officers of Mamata Banerjee government, these are serious allegations including misconduct in the SIR process.

New Delhi. The Election Commission has taken action against seven officers of the Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal on charges of irregularities in the intensive verification of voters i.e. SIR. Seven officers of West Bengal have been suspended by the Election Commission. Besides, the Chief Secretary of West Bengal has also been instructed to initiate disciplinary proceedings against these officers. These seven officers were working as Assistant Voter Registration Officers (AERO) for SIR. The Election Commission has accused these officers of serious misconduct, negligence and misuse of legal powers.

The Election Commission has said that maintaining fairness and transparency of the SIR is its biggest priority. The Commission has said that thorough revision of the voter list is a sensitive and important process. Through which names of eligible voters are added and names of ineligible voters are removed. The Election Commission has said that if an officer does not perform his responsibilities properly or misuses power, it can affect the trust in the electoral process. Instructions have also been given to the West Bengal government to take action against all the seven officers and send the information to the Election Commission.

Dr. Sefor Rehman, AERO of Shamsherganj assembly seat of Murshidabad, has come in the wake of the proceedings of the Election Commission. The Election Commission has also taken action against Nitish Das, AERO of Farakka assembly constituency, Dalia Rai Chaudhary, AERO of Maynaguri assembly constituency. Apart from these, AERO SK Murshid Alam of Suti assembly seat, AERO Satyajit Das and Jaideep Kundu of Canning East assembly seat and AERO Debashish Biswas of Debra assembly seat have also been suspended by the Election Commission. The Election Commission has already taken action against many officers of West Bengal. At the same time, in West Bengal, the opposition party BJP has been alleging that many officers are working as agents of the ruling TMC. Assembly elections are to be held in West Bengal in March-April 2026.
