Supreme Court On Use Of AI In Drafting Petitions: CJI Surya Kant and judges expressed concern over the use of AI in drafting petitions, know what is going wrong?
New Delhi. Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI is in vogue these days. Coding, writing something, obtaining information through AI happens faster than the blinking of an eye, but many experts have also been expressing concern about the misuse of AI. Now many senior judges in the Supreme Court, including CJI Surya Kant, have expressed concern by drawing attention to the dangerous trend of using AI in drafting petitions.
CJI Surya Kant has expressed concern over the significant irregularities being caused by lawyers taking the help of AI in drafting petitions. According to Bar and Bench, the CJI has said that he has been given shocking information that some lawyers have started using AI to prepare the draft of the petition. The CJI also said that what happened with his brother Justice Dipankar Dutta was that the examples mentioned in the petition were not there. At the same time, Supreme Court Justice BV Nagarathna said that a case of Mercy vs Humanity came in which there were no examples given. He said that some people are citing the real cases of the Supreme Court in the petition, but the part given is not in the decision.

In many petitions filed in the Supreme Court, these irregularities due to the use of AI have been detected because the judge reads the petition carefully before hearing it. Also, the examples of court decisions given in the petitions are also compared with the AIR manual. AI is a good technology, but the wrong examples given by it in the petitions filed in the courts can create big mistakes. Now after expressing concern on behalf of senior judges including CJI Surya Kant, it is believed that the Supreme Court can take some important steps in this direction.
