New Delhi. To stop the hoarding of LPG cylinders in India, the Central Government has taken a major step and implemented ESMA across the country. The supply of essential services is ensured under ESMA i.e. Essential Services Maintenance Act-1968. In 1968, ESMA X was passed by the Parliament and thereafter it became law. With the implementation of this Act, supply of domestic gas will be ensured across the country without any hindrance. The government has instructed refineries and petrochemical companies to increase the production of LPG.

The government has directed that companies should divert their hydrocarbon production units towards LPG production so that there is no shortage of LPG. Just a day ago, the government had increased the limit for LGP cylinder booking from 21 days to 25 days. In fact, due to the ongoing war between America, Israel and Iran, there is uncertainty regarding the supply of oil and gas from the Middle East to countries around the world. In such a situation, the Government of India does not want there to be a shortage of domestic gas in the country, hence this step has been taken as a precaution.

Earlier, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India had tweeted that in view of the current geopolitical constraints in fuel supply and disruptions on LPG supply, the Ministry has directed oil refineries to produce more LPG and use this excess production for domestic LPG use. The Ministry has given priority to domestic LPG supply to households and introduced an inter-booking period of 25 days to avoid hoarding and black marketing. Non-domestic supply from imported LPG is being given priority to essential non-domestic sectors like hospitals and educational institutions. For LPG supply in other non-domestic sectors, a committee has been formed to review the representations for LPG supply to restaurants, hotels, or other industries.
