BSF will check Voter ID in the upcoming assembly elections, will also take control of CCTV, TMC protested saying it is a violation of rules, TMC of Mamata Banerjee opposes BSF order to check Voter ID during assembly polls 2026
New Delhi. BSF has made new rules for the assembly elections of four states and one union territory. BSF has given the responsibility of checking the IDs of voters in the polling booths to its soldiers. This has been opposed by the ruling TMC in West Bengal. At the same time, BSF has also directed to change the officers of the rank of Inspector and above performing duty in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Union Territory Puducherry. BSF has directed to implement this order immediately.

BSF has also decided that the control of CCTV cameras installed at polling stations in the four states and union territories will remain with its soldiers. Two BSF personnel will control the CCTV cameras at every polling station. Also, at every polling booth, one male and one female BSF jawan will check the IDs of the voters. TMC has opposed this order issued by the DG of BSF. Mamta Banerjee’s party’s Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has termed the responsibility of BSF jawans to check voters’ IDs as a violation of rules.
This is why @AITCofficial opposed CAPF bill in Parliament- IPS officer Praveen Kumar parachuted as DG BSF in January 2026 & issuing orders (Point 2 & 3) in violation of @ECISVEEP standards. BSF CANNOT check voters – it is job of polling officer! pic.twitter.com/uWlXbumxdF

Mahua Moitra says that this may affect the election process. The TMC MP says that the work of checking the IDs of voters is traditionally done by the employees conducting the voting. Paramilitary forces never check voter ID. Mahua Moitra has said that the order issued by the DG of BSF is an encroachment on the special monitoring role of the Election Commission. There are chances of politics becoming more heated on this issue. The Election Commission has already decided that if the CCTV camera at any polling station or booth remains closed for more than half an hour, then voting will be conducted there again. Besides, lakhs of central forces have been deployed in all four states and Puducherry. A large number of BSF soldiers are on election duty in West Bengal.
