New Delhi. Today, while giving the verdict in the firing case on former MP of Jaunpur, UP, Dhananjay Singh, the MP-MLA Court of Varanasi has acquitted the main accused, rebel SP MLA Abhay Singh and all others on the basis of lack of evidence. Judge Yajuvendra Vikram Singh said that sufficient evidence was not found to prove the charges, hence all the accused are acquitted. This incident happened on 4 October 2002 when there was a fatal attack on Dhananjay Singh. At that time Dhananjay Singh was the MLA from Rari assembly constituency.

In that firing incident, Dhananjay Singh was shot in the hand and five people including his gunner Vasudev Pandey and driver Dinesh Kumar Gupta were injured. The court’s decision has come almost 24 years after the incident. Let us tell you that on the day of the incident, Dhananjay Singh had gone to see one of his acquaintances in the hospital in Varanasi. While returning, Dhananjay Singh’s convoy was ambushed and fired upon near Taksal Cinema in Nadesar, Varanasi. AK-47 was also used in this.

Abhay Singh, Sanjay Singh Raghuvanshi, Satendra Singh alias Bablu, Sandeep Singh alias Pappu, Vinod Singh and Shyam Narayan Singh alias Vineet Singh were named in this case. The police had filed a charge sheet against all of them in the court on 14 December 2002. Dhananjay Singh’s lawyer Srinath Tripathi had demanded life imprisonment for the accused but the court did not consider the evidence presented by him as sufficient. Strong arguments were presented by the defense side. Let us tell you that the names of both Dhananjay Singh and Abhay Singh come among the musclemen of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, earlier there used to be a strong friendship between Dhananjay and Abhay which later turned into enmity due to some reason.
