New Delhi. West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari gave many important information related to the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state in the Assembly today. CM informed that the draft of UCC bill will be brought in the cabinet meeting on July 2. Bengal’s UCC bill will be based on the existing Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand, Assam and Gujarat. The tribal community of Bengal has been kept out of the purview of UCC. A task force will be formed under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai to study the existing personal laws in Bengal.

The Chief Minister said that this committee will submit its report in 4 weeks and after this the UCC bill will be presented in the Bengal Assembly in August. This committee will include a retired IAS officer, an expert in legal matters, an educationist, a social worker and an Additional Secretary as members. The committee will give its views on a total of 9 matters including marriage, divorce, inheritance of property, custody of children, adoption of children. CM said that we had already promised to bring UCC and we will fulfill our promise. UCC will be brought wherever there is BJP government.

Let us tell you that BJP had said in its manifesto before the assembly elections in Bengal that after the formation of the government in the state, it will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within 6 months. Now that the BJP government has been formed in the state, work has started towards implementing UCC. Just last month, Himanta Biswa government has implemented UCC in Assam. In this way, Assam is the third state in the country where UCC has been implemented. The Uniform Civil Code Bill was first passed in Uttarakhand and then in Gujarat.
