Umar Khalid And Sharjeel Imam Bail Pleas Rejected: Bail plea of 2020 Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam rejected by Karkardooma Court.
New Delhi. The bail plea of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused in the 2020 riots in Delhi, was heard today in Karkardooma Court. The court refused to grant relief to both of them and rejected their bail applications. Both the accused had approached the trial court for regular bail in the UAPA case related to the riots conspiracy. With this, the hopes of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam of coming out of jail have once again been dashed. According to the Special Cell of Delhi Police, a well-planned conspiracy was hatched to incite communal violence under the guise of anti-CCA protests.

Both the accused, Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, had filed a fresh petition in the Karkardooma court. Earlier in January this year, the Supreme Court had rejected his bail application. However, in the same case, five other accused Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Salim Khan and Shadab Ahmed were granted bail. While giving its verdict, the Supreme Court had said that all the accused cannot be treated equally. A prima facie charge is made against Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam and hence they cannot get bail.

Before that, Delhi High Court had rejected the bail applications of all these accused. After this, these accused had appealed for bail from the Supreme Court. It is noteworthy that in 2020, protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act went on for several days in Delhi and during that time, riots broke out in which 53 people died and more than 700 people were injured. The rioters also damaged many public properties. Delhi Police arrested the accused after collecting evidence.
