Vande Mataram Sansad Nehru Letter
In the Lok Sabha on Monday (December 8), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the special discussion session on the completion of 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’ and described it as a historic moment for Parliament and the nation. Linking the journey of the national song to the events from the colonial period to the freedom struggle and the Emergency, the Prime Minister said that ‘Vande Mataram’ played a decisive role in shaping the national consciousness of India.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Modi alleged that at many important stages of the country’s history, the national song faced opposition, neglect and political selfishness and in this context he also targeted the Congress. PM Modi explained how ‘Vande Mataram’ emerged in Bengal in the late 19th century and gradually became a slogan of independence across India. He said that this song was not only a call for political freedom, but also a sacred resolve to erase the colonial influence on the self-respect and civilization of the Indian people.
The Prime Minister claimed that this mantra, which provided energy to the freedom movement, was often met with misuse and distrust. He also said that after the Muslim League’s 1937 campaign, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had written in a letter to Subhash Chandra Bose that the song could incite the Muslim community and needed to be re-examined. According to Modi, this was the time when Congress itself started investigating ‘Vande Mataram’ instead of countering the League’s protest.

The Prime Minister said that today when Parliament is having a ten-hour special discussion on this song, it is important to remember that lakhs of freedom fighters fought with the slogan of ‘Vande Mataram’ and due to that sacrifice the country became independent. Describing it as a “sacred call to liberate Mother India from the colonial vestiges”, he said that the song awakened courage, determination and nationalism.
He said that during the Emergency, when ‘Vande Mataram’ was completing 100 years, the Constitution was strangled and those who raised the voice of patriotism were put in jail; He called it a dark chapter of history.
Modi said that today, at this milestone of 150 years, there is an opportunity to restore the legacy and dignity of ‘Vande Mataram’ which was buried in controversies and neglect many times after independence. He described it as a proud moment for the nation and said that Parliament should take this opportunity as a historical responsibility. The opposition is also expected to actively participate in the special discussion, which is likely to lead to a wide-ranging debate on the heritage, history and current relevance of the national anthem.
