Pipeline burst in Kalyan Fata; Water cut in Thane from December 9

Lakhs of residents of Thane will face 30 per cent water cut from December 9. This decision has been taken due to the bursting of the main pipeline supplying water from Pise Dam to Temghar Water Treatment Plant near Kalyan Phata. The pipeline was damaged on Saturday (December 6) morning during the ongoing work of Mahapuni Gas, following which Thane Municipal Corporation has decided to reduce the supply on a large scale in the entire city. According to the city administration, the repair work is going on a war footing, but due to the pipeline being old and made of pre-stressed concrete, complete restoration may take at least three more days. Due to this reason the pressure of water supply has already reduced considerably.

This 30 percent cut being implemented in Thane is more than Mumbai, where a 15 percent cut was implemented earlier this week. The situation has become more serious after the pipe burst here, because this is the same 1000 mm diameter pipeline which handles a major part of the city’s water supply. Officials said the severity of the damage and the delicate condition of the pipeline have further complicated the repair work, increasing supply uncertainty.

The Water Supply Department has announced that till December 11, water will be supplied in the city on the basis of ‘zoning system’. This means that different areas will get low pressure or intermittent water at different times. Citizens have been advised to store water as per their requirement and use it with utmost moderation for the next few days, so that the difficult situation does not escalate further.

The impact of the cuts will be profound on everyday life. Almost every activity in homes, from cooking to cleaning and drinking water, will be affected. Residential societies, small businesses, hotels and restaurants all have to manage their daily routine amid limited water supply. Meanwhile, an eight-hour water cut was also imposed in many parts of Mumbai on Sunday (December 7), and 15 percent water cut continues in 14 areas since December 8.

However, officials have admitted that the situation in Thane is more serious as the supply is being reduced by 30 percent in the entire city, leading to a widespread water crisis.
