From Gomukhasana to Jalneti, yoga will provide relief from sinusitis.
The problem of sinusitis troubles many people in winter. The good news is that along with medicines, yoga and pranayam can also provide relief. The problem of sinusitis is very painful. In this, due to swelling or infection in the empty spaces (sinuses) present in the bones around the nose, the face feels heavy, headache occurs, the nose remains blocked and mucus accumulates. This happens due to virus, bacteria or allergy.
Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga suggests some special asanas, pranayam and purification exercises to get rid of the problem of sinusitis. These exercises open the sinuses, remove mucus and help reduce inflammation.
The main exercises suggested by the institute include Jalneti Kriya, Bhramari Pranayam, Gomukhasana along with other pranayams and yogasanas. Pour lukewarm salt water into Jalneti through one nostril and take it out through the other. This clears the dirt and mucus from the sinuses. This should be done 2-3 times a week. The second is Bhramari Pranayam. Close your eyes and ears and hum like a bumblebee. This creates vibration in the sinuses and loosens the accumulated mucus. Kapalbhati is also effective. This exercise of rapid exhalation opens the sinuses and increases the oxygen level.
In Nadi Shodhan Pranayam, inhaling and exhaling through both the nostrils alternately is also effective. With this, both the nasal tubes become clean and balanced. Sutraneti also provides relief in sinusitis. Deep cleaning of the sinuses is done by passing a thin rubber tube (catheter) from the nose to the throat.
Suryabhedan Pranayam is also helpful in removing the problem of sinusitis. In this, breathing is done only through the right nostril and exhaling through the left. It is very beneficial in cold and sinus. Some asanas are also beneficial for providing relief from the problem of sinusitis. If we look at the asanas, it includes Paschimottanasana, Gomukhasana, Uttan Mandukasana and Shavasana. These asanas relax the muscles of the neck, shoulders and face and reduce pressure on the sinuses.
Experts say that by practicing for a few minutes daily, the nose starts clearing, headache reduces and the face feels light. These activities, especially Jalneti and Sutraneti, should be practiced only under the supervision of a yoga instructor.
