PM Modi-CM Himanta salute Assam heroes on Martyr’s Day!

On the occasion of Martyrs’ Day on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered more than 860 martyrs who were martyred during the historic Assam movement between 1979-1985 and paid emotional tribute to them.

While posting on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi talked about always giving a special place to the Assam movement in the history of the country and reiterated his commitment to fulfill the dreams of the martyrs.

He wrote, “Today, on Martyrs’ Day, we remember the bravery of all those who were part of the Assam Movement. This movement will always hold a special place in our history. We reiterate our commitment to fulfill the dreams of those who took part in the Assam Movement, especially to strengthen the culture of Assam and the all-round progress of the state.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma immediately re-posted the Prime Minister’s post and wrote, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi rightly said that the legacy of the brave martyrs of the Assam movement remains a guiding light for us. Under your guidance, we are committed to ensuring the all-round development of Assam, as he envisioned.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also paid tribute by posting a separate post on Martyr’s Day. He wrote, “On Martyrs’ Day, I pay tribute to Khargeshwar Talukdar and more than 850 brave men of the Assam movement who laid down their lives for I Asomi (Mother Assam). Their love for the motherland will always be an inspiration to us and today we remember their supreme sacrifice.”

Every year 10 December is celebrated as ‘Martyrs’ Day’ in Assam. On this day in 1980, during the Assam movement, the first martyr Khargeshwar Talukdar became the victim of bullet.

This six-year long movement, led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU), was against illegal Bangladeshi infiltration. A total of 860 people were martyred during the movement, most of whom were youth and students.
