Preliminary investigation has revealed that the identity of the Hindu girl and the accused Muslim youth Abdul were known for about a year. There was a friendship between the two, but the girl ended the relationship when Abdul continuously pressurized her to convert to Islam and get married. It was only after the girl ended the relationship and refused to change her religion that Abdul became aggressive and attacked her.
For the arrest of Abdul, the police had launched a door-to-door search operation in Rambagh, Qureshi Nagar and surrounding areas and had also announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on him. Meanwhile, the investigation is now taking a new turn after his body was found in the Ganga on Tuesday.
A case was also registered against Abdul under BNS Section 333 (intrusion into house after preparation of attack), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 109(1) (attempt to murder) and Uttar Pradesh Illegal Conversion Prohibition Act in Katra police station. Police are now investigating the circumstances of the death, the attack case and possible suicide or murder angle.
