Various government employee unions of the state have decided to go on strike against the Tamil Nadu government. However, the government has warned employees of deducting one day’s salary for being absent from duty.

Government employee unions under the leadership of Government Employees and Teachers Association in Tamil Nadu are continuously protesting against the government. The employees are demanding abolition of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Under this movement, the unions have announced a one-day strike on Thursday, in which employees of all departments have been asked to stay away from work.

After the announcement of the strike, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam said that one day’s salary will be deducted from all employees who remain absent from duty to join the protest.

The Chief Secretary has issued a circular warning that the salary of any employee taking leave will be deducted. In the circular sent to all Additional Chief Secretaries and District Collectors, it has been instructed that no casual leave or any other type of leave will be granted on December 11. However, permission for leave has been given on medical grounds.

The Chief Secretary has stressed on monitoring the attendance of employees in all government departments. Heads of departments have been asked to ensure that employees report for duty normally and take note of any unauthorized absence.

The circular said that officers not following the attendance rules will be considered as violating service rules.

The Chief Secretary has also directed all departments to send a consolidated attendance report to the government through email by 10.15 am. This record is expected to include the names of present and absent employees and those who tried to take leave without proper approval.
